Short answer: for minor damage, often not. If the repair costs less than your excess, or only slightly more, a private repair usually makes better financial sense, and it keeps the claim off your insurance history.
Compare the repair price with your excess
Start with a private quote. Car-park scrapes, bumper scuffs, stone chips and door dings are often quick repairs. If the quote comes in below your excess, claiming won’t save you anything.
When claiming makes sense
- The damage is well above your excess, such as a collision or hail damage.
- Another driver was at fault and you have their details.
- Structural parts, sensors or lights need replacing.
Get an estimate from photos
